Lions are rarely featured in Irish myths, but they do appear occasionally in art and literature to represent the warrior King Lugh. Lions were also a symbol of royalty in Celtic mythology and were used to distinguish between the nobility and commoners.

The tiny green dot at the end of the tail is a special touch , it reminds me of a phenomenon that is seen at the moment of sunset over the Pacific Ocean when a green flash can be seen with the naked eye... A magical sight to behold. Thank you to RJC for pointing that out to me many, many years ago.
